North Texas Bootmaking Capital

Listings in Nocona, TX

Welcome to Nocona, a North Texas town where Comanche history, the Katy Railroad, and a century of handcrafted bootmaking converge along U.S. Highway 82.

Nocona is a city in north-central Montague County, Texas, in the rolling ranch country of North Texas along U.S. Highway 82, between Gainesville and Wichita Falls. The community has maintained a population of roughly 3,000 residents for generations, a stable scale that reflects its role as the economic and industrial center of northern Montague County. The town was founded in 1887 when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad — the Katy — built through the county, drawing businesses and residents from older settlements bypassed by the line. It was named for Peta Nocona, a Comanche chief, and incorporated as a city in 1891. The railroad made Nocona a shipping point for the region's cattle and agriculture and set the stage for its later industrial identity. Nocona is best known for leather. In the 1920s, the bootmaking enterprise that became Nocona Boots was established in town, launching a heritage of handcrafted western footwear that remains associated with the Nocona name to this day. The town also became home to Nocona Athletic Goods, a manufacturer of baseballs and gloves that supplied generations of players. Fenoglio Boot Company continues the bootmaking tradition on historic Clay Street, and the old factories anchor a downtown whose century-old buildings speak to the town's manufacturing past. Today Nocona blends that industrial heritage with the rhythms of a small North Texas ranching town. Lake Nocona, a reservoir just outside the city, provides fishing, boating, and shoreline recreation, while Nocona ISD and community events such as the annual Fun Day festival keep civic life centered on the town itself. For homebuyers, Nocona offers the affordability and space of a small North Texas community with a distinct sense of identity, within regional reach of Wichita Falls and the Dallas–Fort Worth metro.

City Guide

About Nocona

Real Estate & Housing

Nocona's housing reflects its long, stable history as a small manufacturing and ranching town. The established neighborhoods around downtown hold early-20th-century homes and mid-century ranch houses, many on generous lots shaded by mature trees. Newer construction appears on the town's edges as modest single-family homes, while surrounding Montague County offers acreage and rural properties for those wanting land. The city's affordability and space are a draw for households leaving larger North Texas markets, and the housing stock tends toward practical, single-family homes rather than dense development.

Neighborhoods

Lifestyle in Nocona

Life in Nocona carries a distinctly western, small-town character. The bootmaking and leather heritage is visible in the shops and factories of historic Clay Street and in the town's ongoing association with western wear. Ranching and agriculture remain part of the local fabric, and community events such as the annual Fun Day festival bring residents together each spring. Lake Nocona shapes weekend recreation, while churches, school activities, and high school athletics anchor daily social life. It is a community where history and craftsmanship still matter to residents.

Schools & Education

Nocona is served by Nocona Independent School District, which operates three campuses — elementary, middle, and high school — for roughly 750 students. The district is a focal point of community life, with Nocona High School athletics, band, FFA, and academic programs drawing broad participation. As a community district in a small town, Nocona ISD offers a close-knit educational environment where families know their teachers and classmates.

Getting Around

U.S. Highway 82 is Nocona's principal route, running east toward Gainesville and the Interstate 35 corridor and west toward Wichita Falls. The city's position in North Texas places the Dallas–Fort Worth metro and the Red River region within regional driving distance, though commuting to the metro is generally reserved for occasional trips rather than daily travel. Local roads connect Nocona to the smaller communities of Montague County and to Lake Nocona.

Parks & Recreation

Lake Nocona, a reservoir just outside the city, is the area's primary recreational asset, supporting fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish, along with boating and shoreline camping. The lake and its surrounding parks draw anglers and weekend boaters from across North Texas. In town, the historic Clay Street district and the old boot factory buildings offer a walkable glimpse of the city's leather-making past, and the annual Fun Day festival adds a signature community celebration each May. The surrounding ranch country provides space for hunting and outdoor pursuits common to North Texas.
