Small Town in Kaufman County

Listings in Scurry, TX

Welcome to Scurry, a small Kaufman County town on State Highway 34, about 35 miles southeast of Dallas and a short drive from Cedar Creek Lake.

Scurry is a small town in southwestern Kaufman County, Texas, on State Highway 34 about four miles southwest of Kaufman, the county seat, and roughly 35 miles southeast of Dallas. Its roughly 690 residents live in a compact, mostly residential community of under two square miles, set in the gently rolling blackland prairie east of the Dallas metro area. The town's story begins with the railroad. The Texas and Pacific Railway reached the area in the 1870s, establishing a shipping point for area farmers, and the settlement that grew around it took the name Scurry — honoring Scurry Dean, a local man who died in the Civil War — when residents sought a post office in the early 1880s. For generations Scurry remained a small farm-town anchor, its population ebbing and flowing with the fortunes of rural Kaufman County. The town incorporated in 2003, formalizing a community that had long functioned as one. Today Scurry sits close enough to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex to serve as a quiet residential base, yet far enough out to retain its rural small-town pace. The Scurry-Rosser Independent School District, based in town, anchors community life with its campuses serving Scurry and the surrounding Rosser area. Cedar Creek Lake, one of North Texas' most popular recreation lakes, lies a short drive to the southeast, bringing boating, fishing, and lakeside communities within easy reach. Kaufman provides county services and shopping minutes to the northeast, while the retail and employment centers of Mesquite, Forney, and Dallas are reached via nearby highways. Who Scurry suits: it appeals to those seeking small-town or semi-rural living with a manageable commute toward Dallas and Kaufman, a local school district, and quick access to Cedar Creek Lake.

About Scurry

Real Estate & Housing

Scurry's housing is modest and small-town, dominated by single-family homes on conventional lots, with a mix of older houses and later ranch-style construction, plus some newer homes and manufactured housing. Because the town is small and largely built out at its core, new supply appears gradually, and surrounding rural acreage offers options for those who want a bit more land. The character is quiet and residential, reflecting a community more than a subdivision.

Neighborhoods

Scurry is small enough that it reads as a single town rather than distinct neighborhoods. The center near State Highway 34 holds the older residential core and the Scurry-Rosser school campuses, which function as the community's heart. Streets spread outward into newer homes and, beyond the limits, into open farmland and scattered acreage. This compact, easy-to-navigate layout keeps the whole town within a few minutes' drive of school, church, and the highway.

Lifestyle in Scurry

Life in Scurry is quiet and community-oriented, anchored by the local school district and small-town rhythms. Weekday routines revolve around school, work in Kaufman or toward Dallas, and errands in nearby towns, while weekends often point toward Cedar Creek Lake for boating, fishing, and lakeside recreation. The town is friendly and unpretentious, with a pace that appeals to those who want to step back from metro-area congestion without cutting ties to its conveniences.

Schools & Education

Scurry is home to the Scurry-Rosser Independent School District, a small public district serving Scurry and the surrounding Rosser area. The district operates a compact set of campuses — roughly three schools serving around a thousand students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade — giving it the close-knit, hometown feel typical of a small Texas district. School events and athletics are central to community life.

Getting Around

Scurry sits on State Highway 34, which runs northeast to Kaufman about four miles away and southwest toward Ennis. U.S. Highway 175 passes through the area nearby, connecting toward Dallas, about 35 miles to the northwest, and toward Athens to the southeast. Interstate 20 and Interstate 45 are within reach for regional travel. As in most of North Texas, daily life is car-dependent, with Dallas-Fort Worth International and Dallas Love Field serving air travel.

Parks & Recreation

Cedar Creek Lake is Scurry's principal recreation destination. The reservoir, one of the larger and most popular lakes in North Texas, lies a short drive southeast of town and offers boating, fishing, camping, and lakeside communities. Closer to home, the town's school fields and small parks serve local needs, while Kaufman provides additional parks and recreation. The open prairie and nearby lakes make the area a base for fishing, hunting, and outdoor life.
